Leaving a legacy gift in your will
Could you leave us a legacy gift in your Will?
Leaving a gift in your Will (also called Legacy Giving) to a charity you are passionate about is a wonderful way to have a long-lasting impact after you are gone.
It is a very personal decision to do this, and will probably be the most significant charitable gift you’ll ever make. We would be so grateful if you could consider leaving Refuge4Pets a gift in your Will.
The difference you can make to Refuge4Pets
Refuge4Pets is a small charity and a legacy gift in your Will would have a huge impact. Since we started in 2017, we have supported nearly 500 families to escape domestic abuse by fostering over 800 animals. With your gift we could help so many more people and animals escape domestic abuse and re-build their lives together.
A gift in your Will can help ensure this vital lifeline continues, providing safety and support for both people and their beloved pets for years to come. Every gift, regardless of size, will make a difference.
“He threatened that if I ever tried to leave, he would kill my dog. He tormented her, just like he tormented me. We wouldn’t be alive if it wasn’t for Refuge4Pets. I will be forever grateful to her foster family who took such great care of her until I could have her back with me. Together, we are now rebuilding our lives.”
If you would like to speak to us about leaving a gift in your Will to Refuge4Pets, please call us on 0300 4000 121 or send an email to info@refuge4pets.org.uk and we can arrange for our charity’s Founder, or one of our Trustees, to contact you to discuss your gift in confidence.
What type of gift should I leave in my Will?
There are three different ways you can leave a gift in your Will to a charity. You may choose to leave us a set sum of money (this is a pecuniary legacy), a specific non-money item (this is called a specific legacy), or the whole/share of your estate (this is a residual legacy).
Pecuniary legacy: This a set amount of money that you state in your Will (e.g. £5,000, £100,000 etc). As the value of the gift is set at the point you make your Will, it’s worth remembering that the value this type of gift to the charity will decrease over time due to inflation.
Specific legacy: This is specified non-money gift such as a personal possession like a piece of jewellery or a property.
Residuary legacy: This could be the whole or a percentage of your estate, once any specified gifts have been made to friends and family. Many charity supporters choose to leave this type of legacy because its value will be dependent on the value of your estate at any given time, rather than a set amount and won’t be devalued over time due to inflation.
“I am really proud to have given Refuge4Pets a major beneficiary in my Will. It gives me peace of mind to know what good will come of the money.” Steve
How to make a Will
If you don’t have a Will already, there is a local Solicitor here in Cornwall that is offering a simple, free Will-writing service to anyone wanting to include a legacy to Refue4Pets. Piri Gallington at Gallingtons Law has over 20 years of trusted legal experience and is a fully accredited member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners and can write your Will for you:

Alternatively, you can find your own Solicitor on The Law Society website or use an online Will-writing service such as FreeWills.co.uk and remember to include your legacy gift to Refuge4Pets.
If you have already made your Will, a gift to Refuge4Pets can be added to it by way of a codicil. This is a document that allows you to make slight changes to an existing Will without rewriting it. We recommend you speak to a solicitor about this.
